About Bern
Bern is the de facto capital of Switzerland, referred to as the 'federal city', and the capital of the canton of Bern. The city lies on the Swiss Plateau, slightly west of the centre of Switzerland and 20 km north of the Bernese Alps, with the Aare river flowing in a wide loop around the Old City. The historic old town (Altstadt) in the centre of Bern became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The medieval city was founded by the Zähringer ruling family, probably in 1191 by Berthold V, Duke of Zähringen, and was made a free imperial city in 1218. Bern was chosen as the Federal City (seat of the government) of the newly created Swiss federal state on 28 November 1848. The city is known for its sandstone buildings characteristic of the Old Town, which replaced original wooden buildings after a major blaze in 1405. With a population of about 146,000 as of 2024, Bern is the fifth-most populous city in Switzerland, behind Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne.
